Latest news

  • I am Guest Editor, together with Sigmund Kohler and Andrea Rocco, of a Collection on "Open Quantum Systems" to be published in the journal Scientific Reports (Springer Nature).  This Collection brings together original research in the field of open quantum systems, looking at the theory of open quantum systems as well as their experimental implementation. You are invited to contribute.
  • We have recently provided proof-of-principle that Indistinguishability of bosonic and fermionic quantum probes enhances metrological tasks differently. To discover more, you can read the freshly released paper, fully open access, in PNAS. There is also a story in Kudos. The results have been obtained in collaboration with the experimental quantum optics group at USTC (China), and other theoretical colleagues at University of Nottingham (UK), Autonomous University of Barcelona (Spain), and Ulm University (Germany).
  • If you want to know more about the possibility to directly proving the bosonic nature of photons, you can read the News & Views article by RLF on Nature Photonics. Also, we have realized a new experiment, in collaboration with USTC (China), for a direct detection of the particle exchange phase using photons. This work has been published in Physical Review Applied.
  • RLF has been awarded as 2021 APS Outstanding Referee for the American Physical Society (APS).
  • Our group organised an online event within the European Researcher Nights 2020. Here is the website where you can find information.
  • Our last research on robust entanglement preparation against noise by controlling spatial indistinguishability of quantum particles, published in npj Quantum information. These results suggest that quantum indistinguishability behaves as an inherent control for noise-free entanglement generation.
  • Optimising quantum witness and enhancing quantum features by motion of a qubit. Now published on Phys. Rev. A.
  • Indistinguishability of subsystems is a direct resource exploitable for quantum information processing by entanglement. Find this recent work of ours on Physical Review Letters. Featured stories: Physics World, Phys.org.
  • The Special Issue on our Discussion Meeting Foundations of quantum mechanics and their impact on contemporary society finally out on Phil. Trans. Royal Society A.
  • In December 2017 we hosted a Meeting at The Royal Society London on Quantum Foundations and their impact on contemporary society. Read the blog on the event!
  • We show the new phenomenon of "wave-particle duality action at a distance" in an all-optical experiment . The complementarity principle does a further step ahead! Find it in Nature Communications.
  • Check the new book: Lectures on General Quantum Correlations and their Applications, Springer publishing.
  • The universality of Schmidt decomposition features in 2Physics.com, presenting key developments in physics.
  • A universal conceptual scheme, valid for bosons and fermions, for the generation of W states, a very important class of multipartite entangled states in quantum information. Find it in Phys. Rev. A.
  • Read our paper on Schmidt decomposition made universal to unveil entanglement of indistinguishable particles. Find it open access in Scientific Reports. A popular story is in Phys.org.
  • Read a story I have written for Quanta Rei about the making of the work on frozen quantum coherence in NMR. Pictures and curiosities can be found there!
  • Quantum coherence frozen forever, or almost. Our new theoretical-experimental work on preservation of quantum coherence and correlations in a NMR quantum simulator is out on Physical Review Letters. Featured in: "Flash Physics" of Physics World; Phys.org; International Business Times. More on media.
  • Our work on a new approach to entanglement of identical particles appears as a semi-popular article published in 2Physics.com, presenting key developments in physics.
  • Stories about our work on determining quantum entanglement of identical particles by standard information-theoretic notions, published on Scientific Reports. Check: Physics World and Phys.org! More on Media.

Brief resume

After his PhD in theoretical physics from the University of Palermo, Rosario held positions at the University of Catania, the National Interuniversity Consortium for the Physical Sciences of Matter (CNISM), the University of Nottingham and University of São Paulo. He is currently researcher, Physics professor and member of the doctorate board at the Department of Engineering of the University of Palermo, Italy. He leads a research team (Quantum Things Group) on various aspects related to quantum correlations and open quantum systems within a quantum information scenario.

Rosario is member of the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports (Nature Publishing Group), Applied Sciences (MDPI) and Associate Editor-in-Chief of Entropy (MDPI). He co-organised a Discussion Meeting at the Royal Society and is often a speaker at popular events to disseminate academic research. He has been invited in several international conferences and institutions to deliver seminars and talks.

RLF's main research contributions concern the dynamics of quantum correlations and entanglement in open quantum systems and, most recently, the characterisation of composite systems of indistinguishable quantum particles.
